COLOURPOP matte lipsticks review

Hey everyone!

A few weeks ago, a few friends and I decided to order from COLOURPOP online since it was based in America and shipping would be a pain (naturally). It was roughly $18 USD postage costs for purchases under $50 – anything above would incur a total $25 USD postage (Still unclear as to whether shipping costs were based off pricepoints or weight). Also, when purchasing from overseas, please remember to check what type of shipping a particular site uses in case you accidentally incur additional taxes when your package arrives.

Our total purchase exceeded $50 so shipping was around $25 USD postage. My items consisted only of a Lippie Stix for $5 USD, Matte lip stick for $6 USD and with the split postage $6.3675 USD, the total came to be around $22 AUD for me.

Plenty of foam to protect the goods!

Was packaged with the order summary, a few brochures and a postcard

The packaging lids were of funny colours in that they didn’t correspond with the shade of the products inside. I think there’s universal red lids for all the liquid lipsticks whereas for the lippie stix, they use purple lids (as shown).

COLOURPOP Ultra matte Lip in #Limbo

Price: $6 USD

I’ve always been apprehensive towards matte liquid lipsticks because they seem to relentlessly dry out your lips and I’ve always had the fear of splitting my lips whilst wearing matte liquid lipsticks.

I haven’t worn this for a whole day in its dry entirety (i.e. with no gloss/balm/sealant on top) but I have worn it for about 6 hours with a layer of pawpaw ointment over the top (to prevent my lips from drying out)– what I found out was that the pawpaw ointment in fact encouraged the lipcolour to fade – hence, it’d be a great choice of liquid lipstick remover tool (as mentioned below).

Interestingly, there’s no scent or taste (when you accidentally taste your lipstick) which I found pleasant as opposed to a product that gives off an artificial fragrance and/or taste.

The formula dries really fast which is both a gift and a curse – moreover, a dry but silky texture is achieved once application is finished.

To remove: I find it easier to use an oil based product to remove this product as it has superb staying power in the sense that it takes blood, sweat, and a few decades of wrinkles to remove the lipstick if you’re just using a cleanser or a standard makeup wipe. A special shoutout to my friend Kristen who recommended using pawpaw ointment to remove liquid lipsticks!

P.S. does anyone else find using makeup wipes to remove daily makeup (or any occasion of makeup) easier than soaking cotton pads in makeup remover?

If you’ve read my other blogposts, you can probably tell that I’m more of a lip-crayon-over-lipstick-kinda-gal because the surface area of the tip of the crayon is generally smaller than the tip of a standard lipstick.

A few words about this lipstick.

First of all, there’s a scent which reminds me of the Asian white rabbit candies (with the paper you can eat!) mixed with cheap wax crayons.

It’s staying power throughout the day with moderate drinking and eating would be a 6/10 – it also does not have a matte finish as it states.

The design of the barrel itself is impractical in terms of the plastic support near the top of the lippie stix (as pictured). It’s at an angle which creates the unfortunately perfect opportunity for product buildup down the sides as the plastic barrel lays quite close to the cylinder of product.

I feel like lippie stix would be perfect for daily activities, especially in Winter when everyone is still transitioning from coral pink, dusty pink lip colours to more deep and ark shades like plum and beige, as the matte liquid lipsticks dry darker than they appear in the tube.

Overall comments:

Would I repurchase? Originally, no but after some use, I’d definitely repurchase for the wide range of shades available. I really like how they have an extensive collection of muted neutrals as well as darker tones.

Thanks for reading- any advice/feedback is appreciated!
